KPU Affirms 2024 Regional Elections On Track Despite Chairman's Dismissal
Jakarta. The General Elections Commission (KPU) has confirmed that the 2024 regional elections will proceed as planned despite the dismissal of Hasyim Asy'ari from his position as KPU chairman.
"As we have repeatedly emphasized during the national elections, both the presidential and legislative elections, the schedule for the regional elections remains on track," said KPU Commissioner August Mellaz at the KPU headquarters on Friday.
August stressed that the preparation process for the 2024 simultaneous regional elections is still running according to the predetermined stages. He noted that there are no significant issues regarding the budget or the candidate verification process.
"Challenges are relative. It doesn't mean there are none at all, but based on our experience in managing the 2024 national elections, we are relatively on track for the regional elections," he said.
August also announced that Mochamad Afifuddin, appointed as the acting chairman of the KPU, will coordinate all duties and responsibilities of the commission, especially the upcoming regional elections scheduled for November.
"One of his tasks is to prepare for the regional elections on November 27," August explained.
Hasyim Asy'ari was dismissed from his position as KPU chairman by the Election Organizer Ethics Council (DKPP) after being found guilty of committing sexual harassment against a female member of the Overseas Election Committee (PPLN) in the Netherlands.
