Jakarta Student Named Suspect in School Blast That Injured 90
Jakarta. Police have named a student from state high school SMA Negeri 72 Jakarta as the suspect behind the series of explosions that rocked the school on November 7, injuring more than 90 students and teachers during Friday prayers.
Authorities have withheld the suspect’s identity in accordance with Indonesia’s laws protecting minors involved in criminal cases.
Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief Insp. Gen. Asep Edi Suheri said preliminary findings indicate that the student acted alone, with no links to any organized network or terrorist group.
“From our initial investigation, this minor acted independently. There are no indications of involvement with any organization or terror network,” Asep told a press briefing in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The police are handling the case under juvenile justice procedures, involving the Correctional Guidance Agency and the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry to ensure that the suspect’s rights are upheld during the legal process.
“The investigation follows a dual approach -- law enforcement and child protection. We are ensuring the suspect’s rights are respected while seeking justice for the victims,” Asep said.
The explosions occurred as students and teachers gathered for Friday prayers inside the school mosque in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. A powerful blast interrupted the sermon, sending shockwaves across the building. At least 96 people were injured, most suffering hearing loss and cuts from metal fragments.
Later that day, police bomb squads discovered seven homemade explosive devices at the scene -- two that detonated inside the mosque and five others that were later defused or secured in nearby areas, including the school library and waste disposal site. One of the unexploded bombs had a remote-control trigger and was constructed from a soft drink can, suggesting the perpetrator had basic knowledge of improvised explosive assembly.
Investigators from the police counterterrorism unit Detachment 88 said the suspect had been researching bomb-making techniques on the dark web and learning through online tutorials.
“Digital forensic analysis shows that the suspect studied the process independently via the internet. We found no evidence of external communication or instruction from others,” said a counterterrorism investigator familiar with the case.
Police forensic teams continue to examine the recovered explosive materials to determine the composition, ignition method, and whether the devices were intended for sequential detonation.
