Jakarta. A 22-year-old man identified by his initials OWL is under police investigation after allegedly sexually abusing a Pomeranian dog at a pet facility in North Jakarta, in a case that has sparked outrage on Indonesian social media.

The incident allegedly took place at Dogs Ministry, a pet daycare and grooming facility in the Penjaringan area of North Jakarta, on June 1 while the venue was crowded with visitors.

Video footage recorded by the facility’s management quickly spread online, triggering widespread condemnation from netizens.

Yuliana Monica Petronela, operations manager at Dogs Ministry, said staff immediately secured the man after the incident and reported the case to Penjaringan Police.

She said the four-year-old Pomeranian, named Sisi, suffered severe psychological distress following the alleged abuse.

“Physically the dog is okay, but psychologically there is trauma and behavioral changes after the incident,” Yuliana said.

“She became stressed, refused to eat, and appeared withdrawn. Three days later we took her to a clinic for follow-up treatment, and doctors found that her weight had dropped by 800 grams and she was experiencing anemia,” she added.

Penjaringan Police criminal investigation unit head Sampson Sosa Hutapea said the suspect was undergoing intensive questioning as investigators continued gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Police are also considering a psychiatric evaluation before determining further legal action.

“We have questioned the victim’s handlers, witnesses, and the reported individual. At this stage he is still being treated as a witness while the investigation continues,” Sampson said.

“If necessary, we will conduct a psychiatric examination of the individual concerned,” he added.

Police said the case is the first alleged animal sexual abuse investigation handled by Penjaringan Police.
