Jakarta. Police in Jakarta are investigating after a private school reported discovering 995 weapons-related items, including firearms, air guns, ammunition and accessories, in a room previously used by the former chairman of the school's foundation.

The cache was found last month during an inspection of several rooms on the school campus in Pondok Pinang, South Jakarta, according to the school's legal counsel, Hermawanto.

"On July 10 and 11, we found 995 weapons-related items, including firearms, ammunition and various weapon accessories," Hermawanto told reporters at the South Jakarta Metropolitan Police headquarters on Thursday.

"We reported the discovery because all of the items were found in a room previously occupied by the foundation chairman, who has since been dismissed," he said.

Foundation official Untung Sangaji said the discovery was made when administrators opened a room to retrieve equipment intended for students.

Instead, they found what he described as a large collection of weapons and ammunition stored inside.

Untung said the items included air guns, one of which he claimed was capable of causing fatal injuries because it had a smooth barrel.

South Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman Joko Adi Wibowo confirmed that officers had received the report.

He said investigators have withheld the identity of the school while they examine the origin, ownership and legal status of the items.
