Jakarta. Indonesia’s Consulate General in Sydney has urged Indonesian nationals in Australia to stay alert following a mass shooting near Bondi Beach in Sydney, New South Wales, on Sunday.

The Foreign Ministry said it was closely monitoring developments after the incident and coordinating with Australian authorities to obtain the latest information. The Sydney consulate advised Indonesians in New South Wales to be vigilant, avoid the affected area, and follow instructions from local authorities, according to a written statement cited by Antara on Monday.

The ministry said there had been no official information indicating Indonesian citizens were among the victims. Australian authorities have also yet to release the nationalities of those killed or injured.

Australian police, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), said at least 10 people were killed and 29 others injured in the shooting. Of the fatalities, nine were civilians, while one was identified as the perpetrator. Several of the injured were police officers who were among the first responders.

New South Wales Police said two people had been detained in the vicinity of Bondi Beach, but security operations remained ongoing. Authorities have established a sterile zone and urged the public to stay away from the area.

Police also reported a bomb threat near the beach, with security personnel working to neutralize an improvised explosive device identified at the scene.

The shooting reportedly occurred in the northern part of Bondi Beach, near the Bondi Park Playground, coinciding with the first day of Hanukkah, when an event titled “Chanukah by the Sea” had been scheduled in the area.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as shocking and deeply concerning, expressing condolences to the victims and their families. Investigations into the motive and sequence of events are continuing as authorities tighten security to ensure public safety.
