Dubai, UAE. Iran on Wednesday executed two men in separate cases, accusing one of spying for Israel and the other of plotting sabotage as a member of the Islamic State group, state media reported.

The judiciary’s Mizanonline news website identified the alleged spy as Rouzbeh Vadi, who was accused of passing classified information to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency.

Authorities said Vadi provided details about an Iranian nuclear scientist who was killed during Israel’s airstrikes in June, though the report did not identify the scientist or specify when or where Vadi was arrested. The report added that Vadi met Mossad officers five times in Vienna, Austria.

Israel’s ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, said in June that Israel’s 12-day conflict with Iran included targeted strikes that killed at least 14 physicists and engineers linked to Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran has now executed at least seven people on espionage charges since the start of its conflict with Israel, raising concerns among human rights activists about a possible wave of politically motivated executions.

Separately, Iran hanged Mehdi Asgharzadeh, whom authorities accused of being a member of the Islamic State group. He was convicted of plotting sabotage, according to Mizanonline.

Officials said Asgharzadeh had undergone military training in Syria and Iraq before illegally entering Iran with a four-member team. The others were reportedly killed in a confrontation with Iranian security forces.

Iran’s Supreme Court upheld the lower courts’ verdicts in both cases and said legal procedures were fully observed, according to Mizanonline.
