Jakarta. Indonesia's first aircraft carrier arrived at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta on Friday, marking a historic expansion of the Indonesian Navy's capabilities as the former Italian warship prepares to enter service as KRI Sriwijaya.

The former Italian Navy carrier ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi reached Pier 107 at Tanjung Priok at around 7:58 a.m. Jakarta time (00:58 GMT), following a voyage from Italy that began on Aug. 24.

Its arrival was greeted by an Indonesian military marching band performing several traditional songs, including the Betawi folk song “Si Jali-Jali.”

Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin attended the welcoming ceremony alongside Indonesian Armed Forces Commander Gen. Agus Subiyanto, Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Muhammad Ali, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Maruli Simanjuntak and Air Force Chief of Staff Air Chief Marshal Mohamad Tonny Harjono.

The carrier departed Italy on Aug. 24 and was escorted during its journey by an Italian Navy warship.

First Adm. Tunggul, head of the Indonesian Navy's Information Service, said the vessel made several stops during its journey, including in Sri Lanka.

After leaving Sri Lanka, the carrier entered Indonesian waters through Indonesian Archipelagic Sea Lane I (ALKI I), passing through waters near Bangka in the Bangka Belitung Islands.

Upon entering Indonesian waters, the vessel was welcomed and escorted toward Jakarta by two Indonesian Navy frigates, KRI Brawijaya-320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321.

To Be Commissioned as KRI Sriwijaya
The Indonesian Navy has confirmed that the former Giuseppe Garibaldi will be renamed KRI Sriwijaya when it enters Indonesian service, making it the first aircraft carrier in the country's naval fleet.

The name replaces an earlier plan to call the vessel KRI Gajah Mada.

The Navy is preparing 310 personnel to crew the carrier and has begun a series of training programs ahead of its entry into service.

Indonesia is also preparing naval facilities in Lampung to support the carrier's operations.

The vessel's arrival represents a significant addition to the Indonesian Navy, which has historically operated a fleet centered on frigates, corvettes, submarines, patrol vessels and amphibious ships rather than fixed-wing aviation carriers.

Originally commissioned into the Italian Navy in 1985, Giuseppe Garibaldi served for nearly four decades before being decommissioned in 2024.

The ship is approximately 180 meters long and was designed to operate helicopters as well as short takeoff and vertical landing aircraft.
