Indonesian Police Arrests Kazakh National Sought by Interpol in Lombok
Lombok, W. Nusa Tenggara. Indonesian police have detained a 29-year-old Kazakh national sought by Interpol over an alleged murder case in Kazakhstan, authorities said on Thursday.
The suspect, identified by the initials SS, was arrested by detectives from the North Lombok Police at a guesthouse in the tourist village of Senaru, a popular gateway for hikers heading to Mount Rinjani, on Tuesday.
North Lombok Police Chief Agus Purwanta said the arrest followed official notification of an Interpol Red Notice issued in January, along with a court ruling from Atyrau dated Jan. 8.
“This operation was carried out in response to formal information and coordination with the National Police’s international relations division,” Agus told reporters at police headquarters in North Lombok. “All procedures were conducted in accordance with Indonesian law.”
He said the case underscored Indonesia’s commitment to cross-border law enforcement cooperation and to ensuring the country does not become a haven for international fugitives.
“We act on every credible report in a professional and measured manner. This is part of Indonesia’s support for the global law enforcement system,” Agus said.
North Lombok Criminal Investigation Unit head I Komang Wilandra said police launched a discreet investigation after receiving verified information that the suspect was staying in Senaru, a tourism area frequented by foreign visitors.
When officers moved in, the suspect attempted to leave the location but was arrested without resistance or disruption to the surrounding community, Wilandra said.
Police also detained a 30-year-old Kazakh woman, identified as MA, who was at the same location. Her legal status is still under review, authorities said.
According to documents provided by Kazakh authorities and cited in the Red Notice, SS is suspected of involvement in the killing of two people in incidents that occurred on Nov. 2–3, 2025, in the Atyrau region. Indonesian police stressed that the substance of the criminal case falls entirely under the jurisdiction of Kazakh law enforcement.
Investigators seized several items from the suspect for administrative and coordination purposes, including a passport, mobile phones, identification cards, international bank cards, and other personal documents.
Wilandra said the next steps would be coordinated with Indonesia’s National Police headquarters, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and other relevant agencies to determine the legal mechanism to be pursued, including the possibility of extradition under applicable laws and international agreements.
“All stages will follow national law and established international cooperation procedures,” he said.
SS is currently being held at the North Lombok Police headquarters pending further process. Police said the arrest adds to a growing list of transnational cases uncovered through cooperation between Indonesian authorities and international law enforcement partners, and that monitoring of foreign nationals on international watchlists would continue.
