Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. The Indonesian Military (TNI) is investigating the death of Private Lucky Chepril Saputra Namo, who died from alleged abuse by fellow troops, as authorities detain 20 suspects, including senior officers.

On Monday, the mood was somber at the home of Lucky in Kuanino, Kupang, where his mother, Sepriana Paulina Mirpey, tearfully pleaded for justice. She said, “My son did not die from illness. He was mistreated. I ask the TNI to investigate thoroughly and punish everyone responsible. I only want justice for my son.”

Sepriana also recalled Lucky’s unfulfilled promise to build a home for his family, saying, “He once said, ‘Mama, when my salary increases, we won’t have to live in this leaky house anymore.’ He’s gone now, but I pray his dream will live on.”

Lucky’s father, Christian Namo, also a TNI soldier, expressed full confidence in the military’s commitment to transparency and justice. “We entrust the entire process to the TNI. I am also a soldier; I know the TNI will act firmly. Our lives are for Indonesia, but the perpetrators must be held accountable,” he said.

The Indonesian Army Headquarters disclosed that 20 suspects, including senior personnel and peers of Lucky, are involved in the case. According to Army Public Relations Chief Wahyu Yudhayana, the suspected abuse occurred as part of “training” activities, a practice currently under investigation.

Wahyu detailed the charges against the suspects, which include assault and group violence under the Indonesian Criminal Code.

Lucky succumbed to injuries sustained during the abuse after four days of intensive care at Aeramo Regional Hospital.

Military commander of Kodam IX/Udayana, Major General Piek Budyakto, expressed his condolences and assured the public of a thorough investigation. “I am deeply saddened by the loss of Private Lucky, one of our soldiers. This case will be fully investigated, and all involved will be held accountable under the law. Nothing will be concealed,” he said.

Piek also committed to fulfilling Prada Lucky’s dream by assisting his family with building a new home and supporting the education of his younger siblings, who are still in elementary school. “I will personally ensure the dream is realized, and we will take care of the children’s education. I promise to keep the family updated on all developments throughout the investigation. The TNI is open and transparent from beginning to end,” he added.

The Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs has vowed to closely monitor the military’s investigation. “The professionalism of the military police investigators is evident in the indictment of 20 soldiers as suspects. The legal process must proceed according to the law to ensure justice,” Minister Budi Gunawan said.
