Jakarta. The recent Israeli assault on Rafah has sparked strong international condemnation, including from Indonesia, which has been a staunch supporter of Palestine.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry issued Indonesia’s stance regarding the assault on Tuesday night, demanding the UN's decision-making body to take action.

“Indonesia strongly condemns the military attack in the Palestinian city of Rafah and its control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing,” the statement reads. “The international community, particularly the Security Council, must stop Israel’s brutal atrocities immediately and prevent any further humanitarian catastrophe.”

The ministry said any attempt to displace Palestinians, including from Rafah, would be unacceptable as it amounts to an “ultimate crime against humanity”.

Indonesia also called for an immediate permanent Gaza ceasefire and to remove any roadblocks that prevent humanitarian aid from entering the Palestinian enclave.

Earlier this week, Israel struck Rafah, not long after the militant group Hamas had accepted an Egyptian-Qatari ceasefire proposal. Israeli troops have also seized control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing, thus halting flows of humanitarian aid.
