Indonesia Urges UN Security Council to Stop Israel After Its Airstrike on Qatar
Jakarta. Indonesia is urging the UN Security Council to stop Israel after its recent airstrikes on Qatar.
The Israeli military on Tuesday tried to assassinate top Hamas figures in the Qatari capital of Doha. Their targets included negotiators from the Palestinian armed group who had been engaging in Gaza ceasefire talks. Hamas reported that the unprecedented attack had killed five of its lower-ranked members, while its senior leaders had survived. Doha revealed that a Qatari security personnel was also killed.
The attack sparked criticisms worldwide, including from Indonesia, who has been pressuring the UN’s premier decision-making body to stop Israeli aggression, which Jakarta slammed as a “flagrant breach of international law”.
“Indonesia condemns this aggression and repeats its calls on the UN Security Council to fulfill its mandate by taking immediate and decisive measures to halt Israel’s actions and ensure accountability,” the Foreign Affairs Ministry said Tuesday night.
The UN Security Council includes the US -- Israel’s key ally -- as one of its permanent members. In other words, Washington has the power to veto any decision made by the council, including its legally binding resolutions that might put Israel at a jeopardy -- something that has already been done in the past. However, American President Donald Trump has criticized the recent deadly attack on Doha.
Jakarta also said that it feared the airstrike could bring a sharp escalation to the Middle East conflict. The ministry wrote that Indonesia would stand in solidarity with both the Qatari government and people.
“[Indonesia] reiterates its unwavering commitment to supporting all diplomatic efforts toward a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East under the two-state solution,” the ministry said.
The two-state solution sees the idea of establishing an independent state for Palestinians alongside that of Israel.
