Jakarta. Indonesia’s population has surpassed 290 million, with nearly seven in 10 people in the traditional working-age bracket, giving Southeast Asia’s largest economy a sizeable demographic advantage.

The government’s Clean Population Data for the first half of 2026 put the population at 290.13 million, up 1.81 million from 288.32 million six months earlier.

Of the total, 201.06 million people, or 69.30%, are aged 15 to 64. Children aged 0 to 14 account for 65.96 million, or 22.74%, while 23.10 million people, or 7.96%, are aged 65 and above.

“This is a major opportunity that not every country has,” Home Ministry Population and Civil Registration Director General Teguh Setyabudi said at the release of the latest population data in Jakarta on Monday.

He cautioned, however, that the demographic dividend will not automatically translate into economic growth. It will depend on the government’s ability to provide quality education, relevant skills, healthcare and sufficient employment opportunities for the working-age population.

Beyond the headline population figures, the data offers some intriguing glimpses into the lives of Indonesians — including their birthdays, names and even favorite fictional characters.

Cancer is Indonesia’s most common zodiac sign, with 34.78 million people born under the sign. Taurus follows with 26.49 million and Gemini with 26.08 million. Aquarius is the least common, with 20.45 million.

Some 129,439 Indonesians were born on Feb. 29, giving them a birthday that appears on the calendar only once every four years.

January was the most common birth month, with 212,124 births, while Thursday was the most common day, with 144,182 births.

The data also provides a snapshot of how naming trends have evolved across generations.

Among millennials, Herman was the most common male name and Nurhayati the most common female name. For Generation Z, the most common names were Ardiansyah and Sri Wahyuni. Among Generation Alpha, Muhammad Alfatih topped the list for boys, while Siti Aisyah was the most common name for girls.

Pop culture is also leaving its mark. Names inspired by international celebrities such as Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift include Ariana, with 15,281 people; Selena, with 5,533; and Taylor, with 153.

Anime characters have also inspired names. The database includes 190 people named Uzumaki, after the protagonist of Naruto, and 181 named Nobita, after the Doraemon character. Other anime-inspired names include Sasuke, D. Luffy, Shinchan, Usopp, Inuyasha and Suneo.

At the other end of the naming spectrum, one Indonesian has a name stretching to 79 characters. The person was born before the government introduced more detailed rules on naming in population documents, according to the Home Ministry.

The latest data recorded 3.64 million births in the first half of 2026, with West Java accounting for the largest share at 605,109.

Indonesia’s aging population also includes some exceptionally long-lived residents. The population database lists a person aged 118 and another aged 117, both in Madura, East Java. East Java also has the country’s largest elderly population.

Behind the colorful statistics is a major administrative effort to keep track of Indonesia’s vast and growing population. Of the 214.35 million people required to have electronic identity cards, 208.53 million, or 97.28%, had completed biometric registration by the end of June.
