Indonesia Still Counting How Much It Would Donate to Gaza Peace Board
Jakarta. Indonesia is still counting how much it would donate to the Board of Peace as the group counts down to its inaugural meeting.
President Prabowo Subianto will join other world leaders at the Board of Peace’s meeting in Washington on Thursday morning local time. The weeks-old group — that has US President Donald Trump at its helm — is intended to oversee the Gaza truce and rebuild the war-struck enclave. Trump has also asked countries to pay at least $1 billion in cash if they wish to stay on the board longer than 3 years. Founding member Indonesia has confirmed it would transfer some cash, but Southeast Asia’s biggest economy is still working on the financial details.
“The president has made that pledge [to financially contribute to the board],” Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Vahd Nabyl A Mulachela told Jakarta-based reporters, hours before the meeting starts.
“But we have not decided on the amount and the date of the transfer. We still haven’t worked on the mechanism. The group’s first meeting is only taking place today, so there are many things we need to finalize,” Nabyl said.
Nabyl restated that the $1 billion buy-in — or any financial contribution — is not mandatory, although Jakarta wants to chip in some money “to help reconstruct Gaza”.
“We still need to discuss the technical details, including the amount and all other things, depending on the national regulations,” the envoy said.
Trump recently revealed that the board had secured over $5 billion in pledges from member countries to rebuild Gaza. He did not say who these donors were. Prabowo has described the upcoming gathering as “very important”.
“I have been invited by US President to be in the first official meeting of the Board of Peace, which was established to try to follow through on the ceasefire agreements in Gaza, and to work towards a pathway in which we can find a lasting solution to the problem, conflict in Gaza, and Palestine,” Prabowo told American businesses on Wednesday local time.
