Jakarta. Indonesia plans to establish 10 new medical and science universities with support from Imperial College London as part of a broader effort to strengthen higher education, research, and innovation, a senior government official said on Monday.

Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto said the proposed collaboration would involve Imperial College London in curriculum development, teaching standards, joint research initiatives, and visiting professor programs.

“We discussed President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to establish 10 medical and science universities, and Imperial College will provide significant support for the initiative,” Brian said after accompanying an Imperial College delegation during a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta.

According to Brian, the partnership represents a strategic step toward improving the quality of higher education in Indonesia.

He noted that Imperial College London is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading universities and is ranked second globally in the latest QS World University Rankings, behind Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Brian said the cooperation could extend beyond medicine and science to include other academic disciplines as part of a broader strategic partnership in higher education.

The government expects the benefits of the collaboration to reach not only the new institutions but also universities across Indonesia through improved academic standards, research capabilities, and international cooperation.

“If this partnership can be realized, it will be a tremendous opportunity for Indonesia to work directly with one of the world’s top universities to improve the quality of teaching and research,” Brian said.

He added that the initiative could help raise the international standing of Indonesian universities while strengthening the country’s capacity to produce highly skilled graduates and globally competitive research.
