Jakarta. Indonesia will have a sufficient supply of livestock for the 2026 Eid al-Adha festival, with the country expected to record a surplus of more than 891,000 animals ahead of one of the largest religious celebrations in the Muslim world.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is a major Islamic holiday during which Muslims traditionally slaughter livestock such as cows, goats, sheep, or buffaloes, with the meat distributed to family members and communities in need.

The Agriculture Ministry projected national demand for sacrificial animals this year at around 2.36 million head, up 3.82% from last year. Meanwhile, the total available supply is estimated at 3.25 million animals.

“Nationally, the supply of sacrificial animals is sufficient,” Agung Suganda, director general of livestock and animal health at the agriculture ministry, told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to ministry data, the projected supply consists of around 859,000 cattle, nearly 34,000 buffaloes, 1.42 million goats, and about 936,000 sheep.

Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, sees a sharp increase in livestock demand every year ahead of Eid al-Adha, as households, mosques, and organizations purchase animals for religious sacrifice.

Authorities said they are also intensifying health monitoring and veterinary inspections to prevent the spread of infectious animal diseases and zoonotic illnesses.

The government is monitoring livestock transportation routes, animal markets, and slaughterhouses, including conducting ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections to ensure food safety standards are met.

The ministry said it will continue updating livestock supply data across provinces and coordinate animal distribution from surplus-producing regions to areas facing shortages.

Officials are also expanding digital livestock monitoring systems and increasing coordination with local governments and mosque committees ahead of the holiday period.

The government aims to ensure that sacrificial animals distributed during Eid al-Adha remain healthy, halal, safe, and hygienic for consumers.
