Jakarta. Indonesian authorities have detained 13 Chinese construction workers for breaking immigration rules.

They were working on a project in Banten. Some handled the manual labor, while others were the foremen and managers. According to Banten’s immigration office, the jobs allegedly did not match their visa. The Chinese citizens allegedly had the C20, a single-entry visa for foreigners to install and repair imported machinery.

“These 13 foreigners did not have the right stay permit,” the office’s chief Barron Ichsan said on Monday.

“The C20 is for machine installation.”

An unnamed subcontractor had partnered with a company with the initials “PT JKCI” to bring in the Chinese workers. The unskilled workers earned about Rp 1.2 million (almost $67) per day. The Chinese foremen’s salary was around Rp 20 million ($1,115) a month.

Barron said that the company was willing to pay more for the Chinese workers “because they believed the latter had better work ethic than Indonesians”.
