Jakarta. Indonesia, Spain, and eight other countries have slammed Israeli attacks on a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla, as Jakarta demands the release of its journalists.

Israel’s navy on Monday intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters off Cyprus, as the convoy tried to deliver the much-needed supplies to the war-battered Palestinian enclave. The attack quickly drew sharp criticism worldwide, with foreign ministers from Indonesia, Spain, Brazil, and Turkey issuing a joint statement expressing their anger. Bangladesh, Colombia, Jordan, Libya, the Maldives, and Pakistan joined in the calls.

“The ministers condemn in the strongest terms the renewed Israeli assaults against the Global Sumud Flotilla, a peaceful civilian humanitarian initiative aimed at drawing international attention to the catastrophic humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people,” the statement reads.

They went on to call for the immediate release of all detained activists, “as well as for full respect for their rights and dignity”. According to the ministers, Israel has shown “continued disregard of international law and freedom of navigation”. They also demand that the international community “take concrete steps to end the impunity”.

Indonesia has maintained a pro-Palestinian stance. Public support also manifests in grassroots activism and campaigns, hence Indonesians’ presence on the humanitarian mission. The abductees include four Indonesian journalists: Bambang Noroyono (Republika), Thoudy Badai (Republika), Andre Prasetyo (TV Tempo), and Rahendro Herubowo (iNews). Five other Indonesian activists are also aboard the vessels. 

According to Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Yvonne Mewengkang, Jakarta is doing what it can to make sure they are safe and sound.

“We are in touch with various people to gain information on the Indonesians’ conditions, all the while we prepare contingency plans, including facilitating protection and expediting their protection if necessary,” Yvonne said.

Republika has uploaded a video of its journalist, Bambang Noroyono, on its social media account. The pre-recorded message confirmed the abduction.

“I ask the Indonesian government to release me from the hands of the Zionist Israeli occupation forces,” Bambang said, while saying that Jakarta should continue its support for Palestinian independence.
