Heavy Rain Puts Jakarta on Flood Alert, Dozens of Areas Inundated
Jakarta. Heavy rainfall across Jakarta and surrounding areas since Wednesday night has pushed several floodgates and river monitoring posts to alert status, leaving dozens of neighborhoods and major roads inundated across the capital.
Data from the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) showed that as of 11 a.m. on Thursday, 28 neighborhood units (RTs) and 11 roads remained flooded, with water depths varying by location.
“BPBD has recorded 28 RTs and 11 roads that are still inundated,” BPBD Data and Information Center head Muhamad Yohan said in a statement.
Water levels rose at several key monitoring points, including the Katulampa Weir, Sunter Hulu, Pesanggrahan, Angke Hulu, as well as the Manggarai and Karet floodgates, all of which reached Alert Level 3 at various times. The status signals an increased risk of river overflow into downstream residential areas.
Authorities said the flooding was triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall combined with water flows from upstream areas, particularly Bogor and its surroundings.
East Jakarta was the hardest-hit area, with 14 RTs flooded across four subdistricts: Bidara Cina (4 RTs), Kampung Melayu (4), Cawang (5), and Cililitan (1). Water levels there reached 110 to 150 centimeters, driven by intense rainfall and overflow from the Ciliwung River.
In West Jakarta, flooding affected 10 RTs in Kedaung Kali Angke (3 RTs), Rawa Buaya (3), and Kedoya Selatan (4), with water depths ranging from 30 to 80 centimeters, largely due to heavy rain and overflow from the Pesanggrahan River.
South Jakarta recorded flooding in three RTs, located in Cipulir (1 RT) and Kuningan Barat (2 RTs), with water depths of 40 to 60 centimeters. Meanwhile, North Jakarta saw flooding in one RT in Rorotan, with water reaching about 50 centimeters.
Flooding also disrupted transportation, with 11 roads across Jakarta still submerged, affecting traffic flow. Water depths on these roads ranged from 10 to 50 centimeters, according to BPBD.
Flooding disrupted traffic along Daan Mogot Road in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, stranding several TransJakarta buses and bringing traffic to a standstill during the rush hour. Water covering large sections of the road left buses unable to move, forcing passengers to get off and continue their commute on foot.
Some commuters walked along the bus lane or used sidewalks, which were also crowded as motorcycles tried to bypass congestion. One passenger, Amir, 29, said he walked about 2 kilometers to reach his workplace in Kalideres after waiting in a bus that was no longer moving.
BPBD said it has deployed personnel to all affected locations and is coordinating with the Water Resources Agency, Public Works Agency, and the Fire and Rescue Department to pump out floodwaters and ensure drainage systems function properly.
“We are coordinating with local subdistrict and district officials and preparing basic necessities for affected residents. The standing water is targeted to recede as quickly as possible,” Yohan said.
Residents have been urged to remain alert as weather forecasts indicate continued potential for heavy rainfall. BPBD advised the public to contact the 112 emergency hotline, which operates 24 hours a day and is free of charge, in case of flooding-related emergencies.
BPBD said it will continue to provide updates as weather conditions evolve and floodwaters recede across Jakarta.
