Germany’s Steinmeier Lands in Jakarta for Prabowo Talks
Jakarta. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier landed in Jakarta on Monday morning for bilateral talks with his Indonesian counterpart Prabowo Subianto.
Steinmeier stepped out of his presidential aircraft at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base at around 9.30 a.m. This marks the first time for Prabowo to host the German politician since assuming power in October 2024. German Ambassador Ralf Beste told the press a few days ago that there were “ongoing discussions” for some deal signings. However, he refused to disclose the details on the documents.
“In a changing world, Germany sees the need to diversify and strengthen its partnerships. An emerging and rising middle power such as Indonesia is a very important key partner for us,” Beste said.
Prabowo’s predecessor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had Steinmeier at the Bogor Palace back in 2022. They agreed to step up investments in high-tech industries, including electric vehicles, as well as human capital development.
Official statistics showed Indonesia’s annual trade with Germany hit $6.1 billion in 2025, and neared $1.7 billion from January to April 2026. Indonesia had registered at least $78.4 million worth of German investments this year.
