Four Indonesian Soldiers Detained Over Acid Attack on Rights Activist
Jakarta. The Indonesian Military Police have detained four service members suspected of carrying out an acid attack on a human rights activist, authorities said on Wednesday.
The suspects are being held at the Military Police Center (Pomdam) in Jakarta to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
Military Police Commander Major General Yusri Nuryanto identified the suspects as Captain NDA, First Lieutenant SL, First Lieutenant BHW, and Second Sergeant ES, who are affiliated with the Air Force and Navy.
Speaking at a press conference at the Indonesian National Armed Forces headquarters in East Jakarta, Yusri said investigators are still examining the motive and intent behind the attack and will coordinate with the Indonesian National Police on further legal steps.
The four suspects have been charged under Article 467 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code for premeditated assault, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
The victim, Andrie Yunus, a member of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, was attacked on March 12 after attending a podcast recording at the Indonesia Legal Aid Foundation office in Central Jakarta.
The discussion reportedly covered issues related to military involvement in civilian affairs. Andrie sustained serious burns to his face, chest, and arms in the attack.
