Indonesian Military Intelligence Chief Steps Down Amid Acid Attack Probe
Jakarta. The head of the Indonesian Military (TNI)'s Strategic Intelligence Agency (Bais), Lieutenant General Yudi Abrimantyo, stepped down on Wednesday, a military spokesperson said, as an investigation continues into an acid attack on a human rights activist allegedly involving agency personnel.
Military spokesperson Aulia Dwi Nasrullah described the move as a “handover of position” as a form of accountability, but did not name a replacement for the now-vacant post.
“As a form of accountability, today the handover of the Bais chief position has been carried out,” Aulia said at TNI headquarters in Jakarta.
The resignation comes after the Military Police Center detained four Bais personnel suspected of involvement in an acid attack on Andrie Yunus, deputy coordinator of the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (Kontras).
Major General Yusri Nuryanto, commander of the Military Police Center, said the four suspects had been formally charged and placed in detention for further investigation. They are active-duty personnel assigned to the Bais headquarters detachment, he added.
Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack, with the inquiry ongoing.
“We are still examining the motives of the four suspects,” Yusri said.
