Jakarta. Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim has faced sharp criticism from former Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Jusuf has accused Nadiem of lacking experience in education, seldom visiting the regions, and rarely being present at his office.

Nadiem chose not to directly address Jusuf's criticisms when approached by journalists at the parliament complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

“I acknowledge the challenges and criticisms we face,” the ride-hailing app Gojek founder said during a meeting with Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR). “These criticisms help us improve and drive us to better serve our constituents in education.”

Nadiem recognized that the DPR frequently critiques him and his ministry but believes these criticisms stem from a shared goal to enhance Indonesia’s education system.

“Despite the criticisms, Commission X remains a partner striving for the same mission,” Nadiem noted. “Their feedback is valuable for our progress and underscores the importance of partnership between the commission and the ministry.”

He expressed gratitude towards the DPR for their oversight and support over the past five years, highlighting the numerous episodes of the "Merdeka Belajar" (Freedom in Learning) program, which he claims have significantly impacted the education sector.

Previously, Kalla criticized Nadiem's performance, noting his lack of teaching experience and frequent absences from his office. Kalla questioned how someone with no background in education could effectively lead the Education Ministry.

Jusuf also criticized the current structure of the ministry, noting its frequent restructuring and excessive responsibilities. He urged President-elect Prabowo Subianto to select a more qualified education minister in the future.

Retno Listyarti, Chairperson of the Federation of Indonesian Teachers (FSGI), supported Kalla’s concerns. She emphasized that a Minister of Education must have a deep understanding of the education sector and criticized the current system’s shortcomings, particularly at the secondary level.

Retno also referenced the success of past education programs, such as the SD Inpres, which aimed to improve literacy rates and provide access to education in remote areas. She called for similar initiatives to address current educational challenges.
