Foreigner Dies When Trying to Drive Through Bali Flood
Jakarta. A foreigner recently died when trying to drive through the Bali flood on a motorcycle over the weekend.
The woman, whose identity and nationality remain unknown, was found dead in a drainage culvert in the Canggu Pertiwi housing complex in Badung on Sunday afternoon. The victim, along with the motorcycle that she was riding, was reportedly swept away by the floodwaters. Heavy rains had lashed the Balinese regency of Badung since Saturday night. The downpour had caused the water level around the Canggu housing complex to rise to around 2 meters.
Eyewitness I Wayan Sudirta said that the victim was crossing the river on Sunday at 2 a.m. local time. The current at the time was strong.
“The foreigner arrived when the water level was already high. The residents have told him not to [force through the water], but she insisted and fell into the current,” Sudirta said.
Rescuers arrived that morning, but were only able to evacuate the victim after the water had receded. She was found trapped along with the motorcycle between a tree stump and water pipes within a drainage culvert. The rescue team immediately rushed the body to the Prof. Ngoerah Hospital in Denpasar.
Some hotels in the Badung area worked alongside the disaster management authorities to evacuate guests on rubber boats.
