Coach Shin Tae-yong Evaluates 5-0 Loss to Iran in Pre-Asian Cup Friendly
Doha. Indonesia's national football team suffered a 5-0 defeat against Iran in a friendly match at Al Rayyan Training Site, Doha, ahead of the 2023 Asian Cup.
"There were indeed several mistakes from our defense, especially as three goals resulted from our error. In the future, the opponents will likely dominate possession more. Therefore, we will train for that situation, so that players can find opportunities to counter-attack and create good chances," said coach Shin Tae-yong on Wednesday.
The South Korean coach also provided an update on the current condition of defender Asnawi Mangkualam, who had previously suffered a muscle injury.
"Asnawi had muscle issues and he was still in rehabilitation. He only played for 20-30 minutes. That's why Asnawi couldn't play as the captain at the beginning of the match, and vice-captain Jordi Amat took on the role," he said.
Meanwhile, Dutch-born Shayne Pattynama remains in the Netherlands due to his mother's health condition.
"This is a very sensitive situation for him, so I can't comment much," he said.
Elkan Baggott, who plays as a center-back for EFL Championship club Ipswich Town, said that the team gained valuable lessons from Iran.
"The match result might not reflect how the game went. However, these are 90 minutes of learning for many players. So we know we have to be ready and fit for the first match," he said.
In the first half, Indonesia faced difficulties and trailed 0-3 against Iran. Shaman Ghoddoos scored the first goal in the second minute, followed by Roozbeh Cheshmi and Saman Fallah in the 21st and 35th minutes.
Despite numerous player substitutions in the second half, Iran, ranked 21st by FIFA, remained formidable for Indonesia. Almost all substitute players were brought in to replace those from the first half, while Iran continued to dominate the game.
In the second half, Iran added two more goals through Mehdi Ghayedi, who scored a brace in the 71st and 87th minutes.
This match was the third friendly for the Garuda squad after previously losing twice to Libya (0-4 and 1-2) in Turkey on Jan. 2 and 5.
Indonesia is placed in Group D of the AFC Asian Cup alongside Japan, Iraq, and Vietnam. Team Garuda will play their first match against Iraq on Jan. 15. Four days later, they will face Vietnam, and in the final group match, Jordi Amat and teammates will challenge Japan on Jan. 24.
