Bali Police Charge 14 over Vandalism during August Protest
Denpasar. The Bali Regional Police have named 14 suspects in connection with vandalism and acts of anarchy during a protest by online ride-hailing drivers on Aug. 30 outside the provincial police headquarters and the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) building in Denpasar. Ten suspects are adults and four are minors.
Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya said Tuesday the suspects were identified following an investigation that involved 24 witness testimonies, CCTV footage, and evidence, including Molotov cocktails, looted items, cash, and mobile phones.
“These individuals were not part of the demonstrators. They came to disrupt and vandalize public facilities in an anarchic manner,” Daniel said, adding that the crackdown was in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions through the National Police Chief to act firmly against anarchist groups.
The suspects allegedly damaged facilities at the Bali Police headquarters, the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate, and service vehicles belonging to the Denpasar Bhayangkara Samapta Unit. Police said they looted equipment from the vehicles, seized tear gas ammunition, and carried dangerous materials such as fuel and Molotov cocktails, which were believed to be intended for arson.
Ten of the adult suspects are now in custody at the Bali Regional Police detention center. The four minors were released to their parents but are required to report to the Correctional Center.
The Aug. 30 demonstration, which began at 11 a.m. and stretched into the early hours of the following day, turned violent, leaving eight police officers and two civilians injured. Authorities detained 138 demonstrators in total. The unrest also forced the Bali DPRD to postpone its first plenary meeting of the 2025–2026 legislative session, originally scheduled for Sept. 1.
