Medan. The police and military have thwarted an attempt to smuggle luxury motorcycles, fighting cocks, and Pitbull dogs from Thailand to North Sumatra.

A joint task force comprising the Intelligence Detachment of Military Regional Command I/Bukit Barisan and the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the North Sumatra Regional Police intercepted two trucks in the Jalan Besilam area, Tanjung Pura District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra.

They seized 17 undocumented vehicles and 41 boxes of illegal spare parts. Additionally, officers confiscated 63 Siamese fighting cocks and two Pitbull dogs from Thailand, arresting five individuals who were couriers, recipients, and controllers in the smuggling operation.

The seized vehicles included:

  • One Honda Africa Twin 1,100 cc
  • One Honda SP 150 cc
  • One BMW 850 cc
  • Five Triumph Bonneville motorcycles
  • One Honda trail bike
  • One Kawasaki Ninja
  • Three Vespa scooters

North Sumatra Police Chief, Inspector General Agung Setya Imam Effendy, revealed that the smuggling ring had conducted 15 such operations, distributing illegal goods in Medan and even to Java. "Based on the suspects' statements, this group has smuggled illegal goods 15 times, distributing them from Medan to Java," Effendy said on Tuesday.

The operation began on May 20, when the Intelligence Detachment of Military Regional Command I/Bukit Barisan received a tip-off from the public, identifying an impending illegal import smuggling through covert routes in Langkat Regency.

Following the initial interception, officers conducted a follow-up raid on an illegal goods storage warehouse in the Kualanamu Airport area, Lubukpakam District, Deli Serdang Regency. The raid uncovered four additional luxury motorcycles and dozens of boxes containing spare parts, resulting in the arrest of a suspect identified by the initials AS.

"The estimated total loss to the state is around Rp 20 billion. We understand that smuggling illegal goods can disrupt the economy, particularly in the motorcycle industry," Effendy added.

The five suspects, identified by the initials PTP, WRD, SHBD, PND, and AS, have been officially named and are currently detained at the North Sumatra Regional Police Headquarters.
