Jakarta. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to make an official visit to Indonesia on Monday to attend the 13th Indonesia–Malaysia Annual Consultation, where he will meet with President Prabowo Subianto.

The high-level meeting marks Anwar's second visit to Jakarta in two months and the first formal "bilateral consultation" between the two leaders since they assumed office. The last time the forum was held was in 2017.

Malaysia currently holds the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at a time when the region is grappling with rising tensions between two member states, Thailand and Cambodia. Prime Minister Anwar has previously expressed a willingness to mediate in the conflict -- a topic that is expected to feature in his talks with President Prabowo.

According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the annual consultation provides a strategic platform to deepen bilateral ties and explore new avenues for cooperation in response to regional and global challenges.

Established in 2006, the consultation is the highest bilateral mechanism between the two countries, held alternately in each capital. It reflects a shared political commitment to advance collaboration across various sectors, including trade, defense, connectivity, food security, and education.

During the meeting, the two leaders are expected to witness the signing of four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering land border cooperation, healthcare, and information and communications technology (ICT).

In addition to his bilateral agenda, Prime Minister Anwar is also scheduled to visit the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta at the invitation of ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn. There, Anwar will deliver remarks on behalf of Malaysia in his capacity as ASEAN Chair for 2025, reaffirming the country’s commitment to regional integration and community-building.

Anwar will be accompanied by several Malaysian cabinet ministers, including Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

Also joining the delegation are the heads of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo: Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.
