Jakarta. The Attorney General’s Office confirmed on Wednesday that a member of the police’s counterterrorism squad, Detachment 88, has been arrested for allegedly spying on its top prosecutor.

An initial investigation revealed that the officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, had secretly taken pictures of Febrie Ardiansyah, the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes.

Febrie is currently leading investigations into several high-profile corruption cases, including one involving the state-owned tin miner Timah, with an estimated state loss of $19 billion.

On May 19, Febrie was reportedly stalked by at least two men while having dinner at a French restaurant in Cipete, South Jakarta. One of the suspected stalkers was arrested by Military Police personnel who were part of the prosecutor’s security detail.

“I can confirm that the stalking incident wasn’t a rumor; it did happen,” AGO spokesman Ketut Sumedana said in a news conference.

Prosecutors have retrieved data from the stalker’s cellphone.

“Our preliminary investigation found personal information and photos of the Deputy Attorney General on his cellphone,” Ketut said.

The stalker, who is an active police officer, has been handed over to the National Police for further investigation.

The spokesman said that Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin and Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo had met to discuss the matter.

“We need to remain cool-headed in resolving this incident and prevent issues like this from disrupting the work of this major law enforcement institution,” Ketut said.

During the conference, Febrie said the incident isn’t personal and will be settled between the two law enforcement agencies.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said on Monday that he had met with the Attorney General and the National Police Chief to get clarification about the incident, but no further details were disclosed.
