London. Musicians from ABBA, Radiohead, and The Cure have joined actors and authors in signing a protest letter against the unlicensed use of their creative works to develop artificial intelligence tools.

Released on Tuesday, the letter has garnered thousands of signatures from artists expressing concern over AI systems that generate synthetic images, music, and writing after being trained on extensive collections of human-created content.

"The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI poses a significant and unjust threat to the livelihoods of the creators, and it must not be allowed," the petition states.

Notable signatories include Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA, Robert Smith from The Cure, and Thom Yorke along with his Radiohead bandmates. The letter also features contributions from acclaimed writers, including Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro, and actors such as Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, and Rosario Dawson.

Additionally, bestselling author James Patterson signed this letter, following his support for a previous open letter organized by the Authors Guild, which has since filed a lawsuit against AI companies currently pending in a New York federal court.
