London. What the skibidi is happening to the English language?

“Skibidi” is one of more than 6,000 new entries added this year to the Cambridge Dictionary, reflecting the growing influence of internet culture on modern English.

“Internet culture is changing the English language, and the effect is fascinating to observe and capture in the dictionary,” said Colin McIntosh, lexical program manager at Cambridge Dictionary, the world’s largest online dictionary.

Coined by the creator of an animated YouTube series, “skibidi” is a nonsensical slang word that can mean “cool” or “bad,” or be used without any real meaning as a joke.

Other additions include “tradwife,” short for “traditional wife,” referring to a married mother who cooks, cleans, and shares content on social media; and “delulu,” a clipped form of “delusional” that describes believing things that are not real or true, often by choice.

Remote working trends have also brought in “mouse jiggler,” a device or software that makes it appear someone is active on their computer when they are not.

Concerns over environmental issues added “forever chemical,” a harmful substance that lingers in the environment for extended periods.

The Cambridge Dictionary team uses the Cambridge English Corpus, a database of more than 2 billion written and spoken words, to monitor how new terms are used across contexts and demographics.

“We only add words where we think they’ll have staying power,” McIntosh said.
