Magelang, C. Java. More than 7,900 tourists visited Borobudur Temple, the world’s largest Buddhist temple on Sunday, with numbers rising steadily since the start of the long Eid al-Fitr holiday break.

Commercial Director of Borobudur Tourism Park, Gistang Richard Panutur, said the surge began on March 21 and is expected to continue through March 29, with peak traffic projected between March 22 and 24.

“As of Sunday, the number of visitors had reached around 7,900 entering the Borobudur area. We are targeting a total of 83,000 visitors during the 10-day holiday period, with daily arrivals estimated at 7,000 to 8,500,” he said.

By Monday afternoon, more than 6,000 visitors had entered the temple complex. In response, operators have adjusted operations and strengthened priority services for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, people with disabilities and visitors with infants.

For comparison, InJourney Destination Management recorded 76,293 visitors to Borobudur during the 2025 Eid holiday.

A steady stream of tourists has filled the main route leading to the temple. Most visitors are traveling with their families to enjoy the holiday, learn about history, and capture moments at the UNESCO-listed site.

To enhance the visitor experience, management has introduced several initiatives, including Pasar Medang, a culinary area featuring local food in collaboration with small businesses. Traditional performances and Kampung Seni Borobudur (Borobudur Art Village) have also been added to enrich the cultural atmosphere.

Visitors can also rent electric scooters and vehicles for 30 minutes to one hour to explore the complex more easily.

A visitor, April, 21, from Kalimantan, said the Eid holiday atmosphere at Borobudur felt more vibrant than usual.

“This is my first time here during such a busy period. It feels like a new experience, especially with the more lively atmosphere,” she said.
