Bayern Munich Marks Indonesia’s Independence Day with Sarong Football Illustration
Jakarta. German Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich on Monday marked Indonesia’s Independence Day by posting an illustration of its players playing football in sarongs and red-and-white shirts, accompanied by a congratulatory message for Indonesian fans on its Instagram account.
Indonesians traditionally celebrate Independence Day with a variety of quirky and lighthearted competitions, including football matches played while wearing sarongs or even women’s nightgowns.
“Happy Independence Day, Indonesia!” Bayern wrote in Indonesian.
The illustration was followed by two separate videos featuring Bayern players delivering Independence Day greetings in Indonesian.
“To all our fans in Indonesia: Happy Independence Day,” Jonathan Tah said.
“Long live Indonesia,” Alphonso Davies added.
Bayern Munich has had an official fan community in Indonesia since 2008, when legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn played a farewell tour match against the Indonesian national team.
According to local media reports, FC Bayern Fan Indonesia (FCBFI) now has around 40 regional chapters that regularly organize watch parties for Bayern matches, hold futsal tournaments among supporters, and conduct social activities.
FCBFI’s social media community has around 15,000 active and verified members, while the German club’s overall fan base in Indonesia is estimated to number in the hundreds of thousands.
