TVS Meets Prabowo, Eyes Expansion into Electric and Ethanol Motorcycles
Jakarta. Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS Motor Company is considering expanding its manufacturing operations in Indonesia to develop electric and ethanol-powered motorcycles, Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani said after company executives met President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday.
Prabowo received TVS executives at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, where they discussed the company's investment plans and potential expansion of its manufacturing operations in Indonesia.
Rosan, who accompanied Prabowo during the meeting, said TVS had operated in Indonesia for years and was interested in participating further in the government's vehicle electrification program.
“They have already invested here in motorcycles, scooters and three-wheelers, and they want to expand their factory further,” Rosan said.
TVS operates a manufacturing plant in Karawang, West Java, its only production facility outside India. The company has three other manufacturing plants in India -- in Hosur, Mysuru and Nalagarh.
The Karawang facility was inaugurated in 2007 and was initially designed with an annual production capacity of 300,000 motorcycles.
According to Rosan, TVS executives outlined the company's development plans and explored opportunities for further cooperation during Thursday's meeting.
“They discussed their plans and potential cooperation during the meeting with TVS's principals and CEO. However, this was primarily a courtesy visit to the president,” Rosan said.
Rosan did not identify the TVS executives who attended the meeting.
TVS announced last month that Peyman Kargar, currently president of its international business, will become director and chief executive officer effective Jan. 27, 2027, succeeding K.N. Radhakrishnan.
Radhakrishnan will remain CEO until the transition, while Sudarshan Venu serves as chairman and managing director of TVS Motor.
Electric and Ethanol Motorcycles
One of the more notable proposals discussed during the meeting was TVS's interest in developing ethanol-powered motorcycles in Indonesia alongside electric vehicles.
Rosan said the planned development could involve the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology to support research and technology development for both electric and ethanol-powered vehicles. The presidential office confirmed that diversification into electric and ethanol-powered two-wheelers was among the areas discussed with TVS.
The proposal comes as Indonesia seeks to expand the use of alternative fuels and accelerate the transition toward electric mobility.
TVS is one of the world's largest two- and three-wheeler manufacturers. The company sold a record 5.9 million vehicles globally in the 2025–2026 financial year, while revenue rose 30% year-on-year to 472.7 billion rupees, according to its financial results.
