Jakarta. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is set to receive the Agricola Medal from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in recognition of his efforts to achieve national food security, a senior official said on Sunday.

Jokowi will become the second Indonesian president to receive this prestigious award from the UN body, following Soeharto, who was honored 39 years ago.

“Indonesia’s successful food management is recognized by this FAO award, which will be presented to President Jokowi, God willing. Our food security is considered one of the best in the world, and this is quite an achievement,” Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said in Jakarta.

The medal ceremony is scheduled for August 30.

National Food Agency (Bapanas) Head Arief Prasetyo noted that only a few leaders have received the Agricola Medal from the FAO.

"It makes us proud because the Agricola Medal recognizes our collective efforts in hunger prevention and poverty alleviation. This country has introduced the National Food Agency and the food aid program to combat stunting. We improve our food security and reduce food loss and waste," Arief said.

"We are committed to increasing food production by expanding agricultural areas and intensifying food crops. At the same time, we must reduce the level of food waste and food loss -- stop discarding food,” Arief added.
