Indonesia to Begin Energy Imports from US Following Tariff Deal, Minister Confirms
Jakarta. Indonesia will proceed with importing several energy commodities from the United States as part of a broader trade agreement that includes a reduced US import tariff on Indonesian products, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed on Friday.
Under the agreement, Indonesia plans to import liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), crude oil, and refined fuel products from the United States valued at approximately $15 billion.
“One of the key points in the negotiation was Indonesia’s proposal to the US to import LPG, fuel, and crude oil,” Bahlil said during a press briefing at his office in Jakarta.
The technical arrangements for these imports will be handled by the state-owned energy company Pertamina. Bahlil added that coordination meetings with Pertamina regarding the US energy imports would begin shortly.
He also credited President Prabowo Subianto for securing the tariff reduction deal through direct communication with US President Donald Trump. The agreement saw US import tariffs on Indonesian goods lowered from 32 percent to 19 percent.
“We appreciate President Prabowo’s negotiation efforts. His direct talks with President Trump reflect an above-average negotiation capability,” Bahlil said.
The energy import arrangement follows a broader economic partnership framework aimed at strengthening trade ties between Indonesia and the United States.
