Indonesia Reports 0.03 Pct Deflation in August 2024
Jakarta. Indonesia experienced a deflation of 0.03 percent in August 2024 compared to the previous month, according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
"Deflation of 0.03 percent was recorded month-to-month, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) decreasing from 106.09 in July 2024 to 106.06 in August 2024," said Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution & Services Statistics at BPS, during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
In August, the Information, Communication, and Financial Services sector saw a year-on-year deflation of 0.16 percent, with the index falling from 99.70 in August 2023 to 99.54 in August 2024.
The commodities contributing to this month-to-month deflation include rice, chili peppers, cucumbers, ground coffee, machine-made clove cigarettes, gasoline, elementary school fees, middle school fees, higher education tuition fees, and jewelry.
Meanwhile, the annual inflation rate stands at 2.12 percent (year-on-year) and the calendar-year inflation rate at 0.87 percent (year-to-date).
Year-on-year inflation is driven by price increases in several expenditure groups: food, beverages, and tobacco (3.39 percent); clothing and footwear (1.19 percent); housing, water, electricity, and household fuel (0.57 percent); and household equipment, maintenance, and services (1.05 percent).
