Indonesia Mulls Involving Cooperatives in Carbon Trade
Jakarta. A senior government official has raised the possibility of letting village cooperatives take part in the Indonesian carbon trade.
Aside from the free meal rollout, President Prabowo Subianto's economic policies also center on the "Red and White Cooperatives" program. It sees the establishment of over 80,000 village cooperatives across the country to cut supply chains.
Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat has signaled that these businesses can have a greater role in the economy by taking part in carbon trade, particularly by registering carbon units from local mangroves and forests. This way, they can benefit from the carbon sale.
“If they [the cooperatives] are helping with environmental recovery, the carbon market offers some reward,” Jumhur was quoted as saying by the state news agency Antara.
“Cooperatives are the ones who manage and restore the environment in their respective areas. These efforts can be used for offsets in carbon trading,” Jumhur said, while adding that the enterprises can sign up at the ministry-run registry SRUK.
This system aims to support transparent, credible, and high-integrity carbon trading while preventing miscalculations of emission reductions.
