Jakarta. Indonesia on Monday announced the discovery of a major natural gas reserve estimated at 5 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in the Geliga Block offshore East Kalimantan, in a find expected to strengthen the country’s long-term energy security.

The discovery was made by global energy giant Eni and also includes an estimated 300 million barrels of oil-equivalent condensate.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the discovery was strategically important for boosting Indonesia’s national energy reserves.

In addition to Geliga, Eni had previously secured around 2 TCF of gas reserves in the Gula Block, bringing the combined potential from the two assets to approximately 7 TCF.

“I would like to announce that Eni has just secured a new working area, the Geliga Block, which contains 5 trillion cubic feet of gas. We have also found around 300 million barrels of oil-equivalent condensate,” Bahlil said at a press conference in Jakarta.

The discovery came from the Geliga-1 well, drilled to a depth of 5,100 meters offshore East Kalimantan in waters reaching depths of 2,000 meters.

The find extends Eni’s successful exploration record in the Kutai Basin after previous gas discoveries in the same region in 2023 and 2025.

The government expects a sharp rise in gas production once the project is developed.

Output, currently estimated at 600 million to 700 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), is projected to increase to 2,000 MMSCFD by 2028 and continue rising to 3,000 MMSCFD by 2030.

Condensate production is also being prepared, with output expected to reach around 90,000 barrels per day in 2028 before increasing to 150,000 barrels per day in 2029 and 2030.

Bahlil said the additional supply would be prioritized for domestic consumption and to support downstream industrial development.

The strategy is aimed at reducing Indonesia’s dependence on imported energy supplies.

“This is part of our strategy so that we do not need to import gas from any country. We must meet domestic demand first. This gas will be directed to support downstream industries,” he said.
