IDX Opens Higher as Investors Eye China, US Data; Wall Street Tech Slump Weighs on Sentiment
Jakarta. Indonesia’s benchmark IDX Composite Index opened in the green on Friday morning, rising to 8,346, up by 9 points or 0.11 percent, within a range of 8,332–8,354 in early trade.
Market volume exceeded 1 billion shares, with a turnover of Rp 960 billion ($57.46 million) and around 100,000 transactions recorded in the first five minutes. A total of 228 stocks advanced, 171 declined, and 215 remained unchanged.
Investors are closely watching upcoming China’s trade balance and US labor market data, alongside Indonesia’s foreign reserve and motorcycle sales reports, which could serve as fresh market drivers.
CGS International Sekuritas Indonesia noted that the continued rise in coal prices may lend positive sentiment to the local index.
Across Asia, sentiment was mostly negative. Japan’s Nikkei fell 359 points (0.71 percent), South Korea’s Kospi dropped 63 points (1.5 percent), Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 135 points (0.51 percent), and Shanghai’s SSE declined 13 points (0.33 percent).
Overnight, Wall Street lost ground as technology heavyweights dragged down the broader market. The S&P 500 fell 75.97 points (1.1 percent) to 6,720.32, the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 398.70 points (0.8 percent) to 46,912.30, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 445.80 points (1.9 percent) to 23,053.99.
Nvidia slid 3.7 percent, Microsoft fell 2 percent, and Amazon tumbled 2.9 percent, collectively weighing heavily on sentiment. Analysts said concerns over overvaluation in tech stocks and mixed signals on US inflation and jobs data have fueled investor caution.
Meanwhile, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) suspended trading in Omni Inovasi Indonesia (TELE) and City Retail Developments (NIRO) due to sharp cumulative price gains. NIRO has surged 186.89 percent in a month, while TELE remained stagnant. The suspension aims to allow for cooling down and investor protection.
The bourse also issued unusual market activity (UMA) alerts for Pelayaran Nasional Ekalya Purnammasari (ELPI) and Lotte Chemical Titan (FPNI), which have each jumped over 100 percent in the past month. “The IDX is currently monitoring the trading patterns of these stocks,” the exchange said.
Separately, trading in Triniti Dinamik (TRUE) resumed on Friday after its suspension was lifted.
