Yogyakarta. A legal expert proposed on Friday that the Civil Aviation Directorate should be separated from the Transportation Ministry, similar to the structure in the United States.

Feri Wirsamulia, from Tri Sakti University’s law school, argued that such a separation would streamline bureaucracy and procedures in the aviation industry.

"In my opinion, the Civil Aviation Directorate should become a separate agency like the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) in the United States," Feri said in Yogyakarta.

He noted that it is not uncommon for government regulatory bodies to operate independently from their respective ministries. Feri cited the Financial Services Authority (OJK), which oversees the financial industry and stock market, as an example. The OJK operates independently of the Finance Ministry and reports directly to the president.

"The aviation industry is not just about air transportation; it is interconnected with various other industries, including airport and aircraft maintenance services," Feri explained.

He added that placing the Civil Aviation Directorate directly under the president would expedite the decision-making process and provide greater flexibility in adapting to international aviation regulations.
