Danone Not Included on UN’s List of Businesses Tied to Israel
Jakarta. Last June, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) released a list of companies facilitating Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories.
The report shows that these businesses may be supplying materials for construction, security services, equipment for the demolition of housing and property, among others. This also includes the dumping of waste in or its transfer to Palestinian villages.
"This data also refutes disinformation circulating which states that Danone is a company that supports the Israeli occupation of Palestine," Danone Indonesia’s corporate communication director Arif Mujahidin said.
According to Arif, the list released by the UN Human Rights Office is a valid and credible source in regards to which businesses actually provide support for Israeli occupation.
Many religious figures and economic experts previously have reminded people to not get caught in hoaxes related to the Israeli product boycott. These religious figures include Quraish Shihab, Rais Am Nahdlatul Ulama Nadirshyah Hosen and KH Halim Mahfudz from Jombang’s Seblak Islamic Boarding School, who also chairs the Ireng Waqf Board. Public are told to be wise in responding to the boycott, and donations can be an alternative to help Palestinians. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has issued a fatwa calling for an Israeli goods boycott. However, it does not explicitly state the list of Israeli-affiliated companies, potentially enabling companies to crush their business opponents.
Business leaders such as Hariyadi Sukamdani, the chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) and former Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) chair, also told the public to be careful, claiming that there are many businesses who try to take advantage of this boycott for business competition.
The following is the list of the businesses facilitating Israeli settlements, according to the OHCHR. The full report is available here.
