Ceria Group to Power Nickel Refining with Renewable Energy
Jakarta. Ceria Group, a producer of electric vehicle (EV) battery materials, is committed to using renewable energy sources to power its nickel processing operations.
Based in Wolo, Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, Ceria aims to enhance Indonesia’s position in the global EV market by developing a sustainable EV battery supply chain. This initiative supports President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's vision for local companies in the green energy sector. Ceria is part of several national strategic initiatives, including the National Strategic Project (PSN) and the List of Private Investment Priority Projects (DPPIS).
The company signed agreements with the state-owned utility company PLN on Monday. These agreements center on renewable energy certificates (REC) and land utilization for the Inter Temporal Capacity (ITC) Power Plant.
The REC certifies that the electricity consumed by Ceria is sourced from renewable energy. Each REC unit represents 1 Megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy, underscoring Ceria’s commitment to sustainability in nickel refining by using power primarily from hydro, wind, and gas sources.
Derian Sakmiwata, CEO of Ceria Group, said the company's dedication to producing green nickel products. Using Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology and High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) processes, Ceria aims to produce ferronickel and mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) with minimal environmental impact.
“The REC certificate ensures our nickel products have a minimal carbon footprint, supporting our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies,” Sakmiwata stated.
Sakmiwata projected REC usage to rise from 80,000 units in 2024 to 2.2 million units by 2030.
The signing event also included an amendment to the electricity sales and purchase agreement (SPA) between PLN and Ceria, increasing the power supply capacity to 352 MW. Starting mid-2024, PLN will provide this power through a Barge Mounted Power Plant (BMPP) or gas-fueled Floating Power Plant. Infrastructure enhancements, managed by PLN affiliates Indonesia Power (IP) and Energi Primer Indonesia (EPI), include the construction of jetties, LNG tanks, and regasification facilities.
Additionally, Ceria is supporting the construction of a 200-MW gas engine power plant (PLTMG) and a future 200-MW gas and steam power plant (PLTGU) in its area. These efforts aim to benefit the local community and support Indonesia's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
