BI: QRIS Adoption Hits 40 Million Merchants
Jakarta. Bank Indonesia (BI) has urged both merchants and consumers to exercise caution against fraudulent practices as the use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) becomes more widespread in retail transactions across the country.
Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta said QRIS has grown into the primary choice for retail payments, with adoption now exceeding government targets. As of August 2025, more than 40 million merchants are using QRIS, representing 113 percent of the year’s target, while users have reached 57.6 million, or 85 percent of the goal. Transaction volume has also soared to 8.86 billion, equal to 136 percent of the annual target.
“QRIS is now firmly embedded in people’s daily transactions. But as usage rises, the risks of misuse also increase,” Filianingsih said at a press briefing following BI’s Board of Governors Meeting on Wednesday.
One of the most common fraud tactics involves scammers tricking merchants with fake payment confirmations, often using fabricated receipts or screenshots that appear to validate a QRIS transaction.
“Merchants must always check the official notification that payment has entered their account before handing over goods,” she said.
Of the 40 million QRIS merchants, 93 percent are micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), underscoring the system’s role in accelerating digitalization among grassroots businesses that form the backbone of Indonesia’s economy.
