Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo Resigns
Jakarta. Indonesia’s central bank governor Perry Warjiyo has officially stepped down from his position following months of a free-falling rupiah.
President Prabowo Subianto had greenlit his resignation letter, according to State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi at a live-broadcast press conference on Monday morning. Prasetyo said that Prabowo had extended his “utmost appreciation for his dedication in leading Bank Indonesia for around 7 years”.
Bank Indonesia’s senior deputy governor Destry Damayanti will take over Perry’s role as an interim chief.
Destry claimed that Perry had “voluntarily made the decision” based on “personal reasons”, without going into more details.
“The candidate [for a definitive governor] shall be proposed and appointed by the president. This is subject to the House of Representatives’ approval,” Destry told reporters.
She went on to say that the shake-up would not affect Bank Indonesia’s duties in “ensuring the rupiah exchange rate, payment and financial systems remain stable.”
Bank Indonesia has been under pressure since the US-Iran war erupted in late February. The rupiah continues to hit its weakest level against the greenback, and even closed at Rp 17,963 per dollar in the spot market on Friday.
