On the global market, bullion prices retreated sharply this week. Brokerage Dupoin Indonesia noted that gold slid more than 4% from its record high near $4,555, marking its weakest performance in several months amid thin year-end trading.
After the steep correction, gold has begun to stabilize around the $4,300 level, supported by renewed demand for safe-haven assets as geopolitical risks resurfaced. According to goldprice.org, spot gold stood at $4,351.56 per ounce, up 23.43 points or 0.54%, as of Dec. 30 at 10:45 p.m. New York time.
Market sentiment worsened after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would reconsider its stance on peace talks with Ukraine following alleged drone attacks on his residence, claims denied by Kyiv. The move erased tentative optimism that had emerged after last weekend’s meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Tensions also rose in Asia after China extended military drills around Taiwan, while Washington warned of possible new strikes on Iran over its nuclear program.
Dupoin said investor attention has now shifted to the release of minutes from the December meeting of the Federal Reserve, which could influence movements in the US dollar and precious metals. Despite the recent pullback, the brokerage noted that downside risks for gold remain limited, supported by expectations of US rate cuts in 2026, lower opportunity costs for holding non-yielding assets, and persistent global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.
Trading volumes are expected to stay thin ahead of the New Year holiday, with markets awaiting fresh direction from the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes.
