Remembering the Death of Marsinah
Factory workers and activists attended two separate commemorations of the death of Marsinah, a labor activist who was brutally raped and murdered 26 years ago, on Thursday.
The commemorations were held as part of "Kamisan," a weekly demonstration to remember victims of human right violations in Indonesia.
Thursday's vigils for Marsinah were held at By Pass near Karawang, West Java, and at Aspirasi Park in Central Jakarta. This was the 585th Kamisan event and dedicated in remembrance of the "workers' heroine."
Marsinah was a worker at Catur Putra Surya, a watch factory in Porong near Sidoarjo, East Java. She led a protest to demand higher pay for workers at the factory. The protest succeeded but Marsinah then disappeared for three days. On May 8, 1993, her body, showing signs of extreme torture, was found in a forest near Jegong, a kampung in the Wilangan district of Nganjuk.
Every year in May since then, human rights activists, factory workers and union leaders commemorate Marsinah's tragic death to honor and celebrate her courage and keep her spirit of struggle alive.
