The National Police are working closely with the military to prevent security threats in the Indonesian capital Jakarta after last month's election results were announced early in the morning on Tuesday, ahead of the scheduled announcement on May 22.

Police officers and soldiers have been deployed at key points in the city since Monday morning, including at the National Monument in Gambir, the General Elections Commission (KPU) offices on Jalan Imam Bonjol and the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) headquarters on Jalan Thamrin, all in Central Jakarta.

Authorities say they have prepared 34,000 officers and 20,000 troops to secure the capital after the election result announcement.

Barbed wire fences have been installed on Jalan Imam Bonjol since midnight on Tuesday. Carts selling snacks and drinks around the KPU offices were whisked away. Officers from the police's Mobile Brigade armed with long guns and sniffer dogs are keeping watch in front of the KPU.

Authorities have also beefed up security in other cities in Java in anticipation of protests after the KPU announces its official vote tally. Vehicles passing Jalur Pantura, the highway on the north coast of the island, Semarang and Tegal in Central Java, and several cities and ports in East Java, are being randomly searched to prevent mobs from storming the Indonesian capital.
