Dancer Elma Merdiana created a dance in honor of Indonesia's first president Soekarno and performed it at an event to celebrate his birthday in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday. Soekarno, a flamboyant politician and one of this country's founding fathers, studied architecture at the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng, now the prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology, while making his name in politics in the then Dutch East Indies. He graduated from THS in 1926. Soekarno proclaimed Indonesia's independence from Japan, Indonesia's colonial ruler during the second half of World War II, on Aug. 17, 1945. He was born in Surabaya, East Java, on June 6, 1901. (Antara Photo/Novrian Arbi)
