Election Protests Stretch to Second Day in Jakarta
Supporters of losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto were involved in more clashes with police officers on Jalan K.S. Tubun in Petamburan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday as protests against President Joko Widodo's re-election stretched to a second day.
The protesters had been gathering on an intersection near the Tanah Abang train station since 4 a.m. They carried sticks, rocks and firecrackers that they later used to attack security officers.
The police put up barricades and protected themselves with their heavy riot shields from consistent showers of rocks and firecrackers.
The protesters at one time managed to force the police to retreat in front of the Pelni Hospital.
Officers shot flares and tear gas into the crowd to stop them from attacking. In the end, the mobs walked away after negotiating with Army soldiers who were sent as back-up at around 3 p.m.
Since last night large crowds of protesters have been gathering at several points in the capital. Areas around Jalan Sabang and the famous Tanah Abang textile market were the main flashpoints of conflict.
Police are investigating a claim by Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan that six people have been killed in clashes with the security forces. Hundreds more have been injured.
