Balls and Steel: Jakarta International Stadium Construction Progresses Onward
Jakarta. Constructors have begun installing roof trusses on the Jakarta International Stadium, or JIS, in the past week, marking key progress in developing the new sports arena that would become the home ground for the capital's football club, Persija Jakarta.
The club has been without a stadium since 2013 when the Lebak Bulus Stadium was demolished to make way for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train depot. Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro), a local property developer fully owned by the Jakarta government, joined forces with several private companies to develop the stadium.
The constructors relied on a heavy lifting system to elevate and assemble the roof's main and spatial structure — weighing 3,900 tons and having a total length of 269 meters — in a simultaneous process.
The constructors decided to go on with the lifting system after a trial on June 10 showed that the roof structure's build quality and the process meeting the safety requirement. During the test, the roof truss was successfully lifted to a meter height. The constructors wait for 24 hours for evaluation and monitor the technical results before progressing with subsequent processes.
The roof structure will be equipped with an open and close mechanism, making the JIS the first multi-purpose stadium with a retractable roof feature in Indonesia. The stadium would have a capacity of 82,000 spectators.
